NOC Chief Operating Officer Julie Pringle-Stewart recognised with MBE

The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) proudly congratulates Julie Pringle-Stewart on the award of an MBE, for services to ocean science, recognising the key role she played in establishing and developing the NOC as an independent charitable body outside the public sector. 

The award was announced in King Charles III’s Birthday Honours List 2025, which recognises the extraordinary contributions and service of people across the UK, recommended by the prime minister, senior government ministers and members of the public, following an independent assessment process.

As Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer, Julie is the most senior female employee of the NOC (at the time of nomination) and has played a pivotal role in the Centre’s evolution, from 2006 as a joint venture with the University of Southampton, to then being part of the Natural Environment Research Council from 2010-2019, and finally since then as a fully independent charitable organisation.

Julie is a champion of critical infrastructure projects, and has directed major capital programs, including a £10 million investment in marine autonomous vehicles and facility upgrades, such as replacing NOC’s campus roof. Passionate about staff development, Julie serves as a mentor, providing an inspirational role model for women, balancing her career with being a single mother of three children.

Commenting on her award, Julie Pringle-Stewart said: “It is an incredible surprise that I’ve been recognised in this way. Receiving an MBE is not something I ever expected and I am deeply honoured that my colleagues felt my contributions deserved this.”
